Yes, the mandate has been enacted as of June 15th, 2026 and the deadline to install the detectors is January 1st 2027 (link to DOB Service Notice).
Natural gas detectors are required in any room containing a natural‑gas appliance—such as kitchens, laundry rooms, boiler/furnace rooms, or areas where gas piping enters the home—installed 3–10 feet from each appliance per NFPA 715.
A natural‑gas detector is NYC DOB‑compliant only if it meets all requirements in 1 RCNY §908‑02 and is installed per NFPA 715 (2023). It must be UL 1484‑listed, battery‑powered with a sealed 10 year battery, and include the required safety and end‑of‑life features.
